Comparison of two celebrities

ADELE'S music videos are plainly simple, emphasizing the lyrics and the duration of the video is based around what she sings. For example, chasing pavements (a music video) she hired dancers to show the emotions and Adele played a minor role by sitting in the car. This shows that she is not basing her video or revolving it around herself, by wearing small clothes and acting crazy which many artists do these days. But on the other hand she is delivering her main message to her fans and just wants them to enjoy what the sings.
Recently, a record executive has launched this latest news about the music industry's attitudes, claiming the insistence on over- sexualising female artists has led to "boring, crass and unoriginal" music. This is mainly because female artists are mainly focusing on themselves rather than giving importance to their lyrics.

A founder of record label XL Recordings: Richard Russell home to the successful artist Adele, said the she had the potential to change the way women were seen in the industry by focusing on her music rather than her sexuality. He further states "The whole message with Adele is that it's just music, it's just really good music there is nothing else. There are no gimmicks, no selling of sexuality. I think in the American market, particularly, they have come to the conclusion that is what you have to do."

Adele's record-breaking second album which was entitled 21, which has spent 15 of the last 17 weeks at number 1. Which smashed Madonna's record of nine weeks in the top slot, Russell further stated "almost political and sort of radical".

In comparison to RHIANNA her song S&M and the video contained the line "sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me". This song was criticised by some for the extensive use of bondage imagery in its video. Rhianna and Christina Aguilera during the December final of the X factor were "at the limit of acceptability for transmission before the 9pm watershed". Ofcom had therefore 2,868 complaints.Russell said he was shocked while watching a recent MTV show which featured top 10 hits from the female artists, as each video primarily focused on and used "faux porn" imagery. He said he felt a bit "I felt a bit queasy". But now Adele is No.1 he is so happy and feels so amazed. That not only are young girls going to see that, but also the business people who are behind all those videos. It's going to make them rethink what they should be doing."

He further adds about Adele "It is clearly about the music and the talent and the things it is meant to be about. I think there has been a certain amount of confusion, and it's resulting in garbage being sold and marketing with little real value to it, Adele is a good thing to be happening. That a strong female performer could succeed without bowing to pressure to conform to a certain body type of being over-sexualised, was "unbelievable" he said. Adele spoke openly about her image in an interview with Q magazine, which she said that a sexualised image did not fit her music. "If you've got it, flaunt it, if it works with your music," she said.

Adele further stated "I can't imagine having guns and whipped cream coming out of my body. Even if I had Rhianna's body I'd still be making the music I make and that don't go together." This evidently shows that the internet has positively impacted Adele as she is mainly focusing on her music, she is setting a very good example for the coming generation as she will have a positive impact upon them. Adele is being represented as a good example in the music industry whilst others such as Rhianna get criticized and at times break the rules of ofcom.

'Tweets' that female celebrities share on social networking sites

I'm thrilled to reveal Own the Throne!
It evidently shows here how over times celebrities are rapidly changing year by year. In the modern world woman are more free, show that they are stronger and are individually independent. Katy Perry is a well known american singer, songwriter, businesswoman and actress. In this ad she is delivering to the world she is show casting her perfume 'killer queen'. The picture reveals a lot more, she is wearing a crown which shows she is trying to show the audience she have high authority in some sort similar to a princess/queen. This is already showing independence, strength and authority woman in a whole are having. Her body language is useful to as she is upright showing a very elegant side to her. The background at the back is very antique and royal looking. However, it's not so elegant looking as her dress is short and tight fitted. Moreover, her tights look very explicit and are very see through. But this is the balanced look she is show casing to the world through a social networking site. The title itself states 'own the throne' which is indicating to us that any of her fans can look like her, or have similar power to her whilst wearing the perfume. The chair is also tilted this undermines the statement of royalty because she is misusing the props, which shows how she wants to show cast herself to her audience. She is now being represented as a beautiful modern looking woman in our day, who has a lot of money which is showing here equals power.

"The real CAKE isn't HAVING what you want, It's DOING what you want."

This is shot for Lady Gaga's upcoming video by Terry Richardson. The statement above is musically, the story of "Cake" began on September 19th when a DJ, (producer) for Lady Gaga's Born this way album, posted the beat and encouraged his twitter followers to help him write a song about Gaga on Garage Band. He posted the track after loving it, under "Cake like Lady Gaga". As my main focus for my essay is entitled: How is the introduction of the internet impacted, upon the representation of woman in the music industry such as a (music video)? As the DJ first introduced the music and entitled it with 'cake' with very explicit words in the song, they first told twitter about it and they got so many mentions, retweets and favourites so they knew what the audiences like! Therefore the music video came and imitated the lyrics. As there are several social networking sites on the internet today, musicians like gaga get to know by offering a preview if their audiences like it. And she is therefore represented as how the audiences on the internet wish to see her which is being explicit, and going crazy! just like this picture shown here.

Top 10 most watched videos on YouTube

Source: Daily Mail

3. Jennifer Lopez also known as Jlo ft Pitbull "On the floor" 664,969,961 views.

4.  Eminem ft Rihanna "Love the way you lie" 555,807,205 views.

5-6 Male singers

7. Shakira, "Waka Waka (This time for Africa) 519,632,786 views.

8.  Lady Gaga, "Bad Romance": 523,260,512 views

9. (Spanish singer)

10. Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe" 446,223,829

From these several top videos, majority of them include huge female artists. For example, I identified that lady gaga received more views (516,603,937) than Carly Rae Jepsen who received (446,223,829). In lady gaga's video it shows sign of powerful authority through the way her body language is shown as she is acting 'crazy' not wearing enough clothes and showing a negative side to her. In accordance to the view this shows this is something that the audience prefer, through the way she's being portrayed. As a drinker, smoker and related to dead bodies. Where as Carly Rae Jepsen's video was at the bottom of the top 10, however her video is less sexually appealing and more modest than Gaga and Carly is just having fun revolving everything around the song but not mainly her.

Tutorial report 08/07/2013

Based on the discussions, I have come to a conclusion of what may be the questions I will be focussing on. How is the introduction of the internet impacted, upon the representation of woman in the music industry such as (a music video)?

For this question I will be focussing on a music video which shows a woman in control and it's reinforcing and empowering woman's authorities. In line with this I will be searching for a video which is outrageous and how it has an impact to the woman today. I will be focussing on this video in depth and justifying my statements. But also consider other videos which is against my statements therefore creating a balanced debate. Also, questioning the fact that are woman changing because of the introduction of the internet such as for example social networking sites. Having two clear thoughts justified with for example, for- (hypodermic needle) against- (uses and gratification).

Over the next course of the holidays, I will be working on this question and researching in depth of a balanced argument. With theories to justify my research too and this will help be also for my ignite presentation and help me investigate and go ahead with my essay. Also, reading books from university sites and researching various types of articles will help me too.

Ideas

FIVE IDEAS
Why do people have the need to feel perfect, is it how woman are being represented in the music industry? (Subject on Television, Music videos, Magazines and Online)

Are teenagers not doing as better than they previously were at school because of social networking sites? (Online)

How are teenagers being negatively represented through the media, what effect this has on other older people? (TV)

To what extent are British programmes: such as Britain got talent following the pre-watershed rule? (TV)

Are teenagers facing suicidal because of social networking sites? (Online)

THREE BEST IDEAS
Why do people have the need to feel perfect, is it how woman are being represented in the music industry? (Subject on Television, Music videos, Magazines and Online)
A reason for choosing this text is that on a daily basis I am identifying the way in which woman are being portrayed through music videos and social networking sites. Because they are wearing lesser clothes, and showing it to their fans this is a very popular thing to do therefore it must influence a lot of people. I want to investigate if this is the reason why people are going through cosmetic surgeries and want to look and feel perfect.
Moreover, with woman this is a popular issues because they are spending a lot of time to look good! I already know how people have gone crazy to look perfect! going through several surgeries to consistently spending way to much money on fakery.

http://www.beyonce.com/ This is an example, Beyonce is being portrayed as a very beautiful person, this would influence a lot of the other people out their to be as 'perfect' as her.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_industry This discuss's what the music industry is, the people who compose music and take part in it. To investigate how people are becoming perfect due to how woman are being presented in the music industry, I need to know what's involved in this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHp2KgyQUFk This is another example, of how beyonce shows off with lesser clothes to the audience. This may influence audience's to do crazy things in order to become that thin etc. Later on, I am going to research the statistics on females changing going through various of things perhaps due to their role models etc.

How are teenagers being negatively represented through the media, what effect this has on other older people? (TV)
In my opinion I feel that we are being represented negatively, if it's in school or outside there is always an issue with teenagers. As this is popular through the media this effects older people as instantly if they see boys wearing hoody's they instantly have that stereotype in their mind. Therefore I want to investigate if older people are really effected by what the media says, or do they not believe it at all?

http://soulpancake.com/conversations/view/73435/why-are-teenagers-represented-so-negatively-in-the-media.html This website discuss's the stereotypes of teens and the possible reason to why were are being represented as such. In order to go ahead with this I need to understand why they are being presented in such a way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu-JWUt_FMs This shows how media projects media types and if this is the cause why older people are believing it, because they are immune to do so.

To what extent are British programmes: such as Britain got talent following the pre-watershed rule? (TV)
Complaints are always being sent to programmes or ofcom because they have passed the limit and I personally have noticed this for example: on Britains got talent they invited singers weekly during the final episodes Jlo appeared and did a gig. The outfit she wore was wrong, as it was firstly too short too tight and not something for a small child to see! After this there were many complaints! So this has influenced me to investigate are reality programmes really following the rules? Or is there something else behind the cameras!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2327353/Britains-Got-Talent-pre-watershed-TV-programmes-robbing-children-innocence-headteachers-claim.html This discusses how foul language and inappropriate themes on BGT and other pre-watershed programmes are robbing children of their innocence, headteachers have warned.

Summary of what our group discussed

In the previous two lessons I had learnt a lot within my group, our question was “Have Hollywood attitudes towards content in 12A films become more liberal or have audiences’ film desires changed?” We certainly all had our own opinions but as we discussed it thoroughly we were agreeing on main points. For example, we could answer the question as we noticed how over time things are drastically changing and how films are portrayed. We said that in the 21st century there are way more sexual content, bad use of language and aspects of nudity seen in 12A films which are not appropriate for younger audiences. We backed it up with some films for example: Fast and furious 6 contain very strong violence, and the way the camera uses a panning to portray woman (to be sexually appealing to men). We then backed up our examples with theories such as desensitization. This is for example, I may view a violent film for the first time (12A) and I may react strongly because I may have the thought as if it were occurring in real life. But if I’m repeatedly watching violent films, it would allow me to become less provoked and shocked by blood and gore etc. We then linked it of what production piece we could do (trailer for a 12A showing violence). From this I have learnt, how important it is to justify what I am saying from for example a book. Then I need to link it to a theorist, and explain it in more detail. From this I have got a simple idea of how to basically structure an essay question I choose, and what points need to be covered including media terminology etc.

Preparation for critical investigation

Quote 1: “contemporary observers and historians of both the motion-pictures industry and the network television portray the decade of the 1950s as a period of traumatic change.”

Quote 2: "any writer or artist who experienced immediate commercial success would be subject to suspicion, accused of having compromised their artistic integrity to the unsophisticated demands of the mass-market.”

Quote 3: "In spite of the flaws of the 12A certificate, the main problem isn’t with the BBFC but with the studios, who are allowing this watering down to cash in on the teen market."

Quote 4: "the main objective of any regulation should be to protect an artist's freedom of speech while at the same time monitoring to whom the speech is targeted."

Quote 5: "Telegraph writer Jenny McCartney, described the film to have ‘powerful adult themes’."

References to theories/theorist
These claims supports Professor George Gerbner’s model of the Cultivation theory. Cultivation theorists argue that television has long-term effects which are small, gradual, indirect but cumulative and significant.

Other studies have resembled Gerbner’s theory on the effects of violent film. The studies of Eron (1999) have shown youth who view violence demonstrate increased aggression and were more likely to be arrested and convicted of violent felonies.

Media Language: The red line across his mouth connotes blood and gore.

Institution: Subsequently, the industry’s main public relations problem in the 1920’s and 1930’s was the widespread conviction that children would be ‘coached’ in sophisticated, violent or antisocial behaviour through their attendance at motion pictures.

Genre: Those two words are the two pleasures of audiences which have evolved considerably over the years. As technology has improved, so has the action and overall quality of film thus increasing the expectations of film audiences.

Representation: The Dark Knight film represents the Joker as a psychopathic killer who uses his knife to kill people. The Joker’s make-up and costume is very satanic and disturbing to look at. The red line across his mouth connotes blood and gore. Also his scar across his cheek is very unpleasant for viewers to look at especially younger children.

Audience: From the Batman Returns film it is obvious why it was rated a 15. The film contained scenes which had The Catwoman in a tight leather costume possibly used for the male audience’s pleasures.
Ideology: Inevitably public attitudes and values towards the censorship of British film has changed considerably over time.

Narrative: An example of this is the production of the Hunger Games film. The book tells a story consisting of extreme gore and blood throughout which was a huge part of the narrative.
